February is National Children's Dental Health Month, so we here at Dentist.net would like to provide some great tips for taking care of your child's dental health:
-Running a damp washcloth, like My Dentist's Choice Tooth Tissues, over your baby's gums after meals will help prevent bacteria growth
-When a few baby teeth have appeared, brushing with a children’s brush, like Dr.Collins Smiley Star Toothbrush, twice a day will help prevent early cavities
-avoid putting babies to sleep using a bottle with anything other than water. The sugars in the juice or milk will stay on the teeth for hours, potentially causing “Bottle Mouth”, a term referring to cavities and teeth discoloration.
-The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that a baby’s first dentist visit take place by the first birthday. Starting at that age can help to detect any potential problems, and help kids get used to the dentist, hopefully alleviating those dentist fears.
-Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day will help your child keep a healthy mouth. Kids can begin using toothpaste with parent supervision at age 2 or 3.
-Fluoride is an important aspect in dental health, it helps to strengthen the enamel. Make sure to get your child a fluoride toothpaste, like Tom's of Maine Natural Fluoride Toothpaste for Children. Only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste for brushing.
-The largest amount of sports injuries are dental related. It is recommended that young kids use mouth guards when playing sports.
-Make sure your child receives regular dental checkups, usually twice a year, but possibly more depending on the recommendation of your dentist.
-keeping sugary foods to a minimum, and regular brushing and flossing are the best ways to keep a child’s smile at its healthiest.
